ABOUT SUSAN YACOUB
Susan has been working with leather for 40 years. Reigning from a family of designers, as a self-taught artisan Susan attended various workshops over the years and became acquainted with leather artisans from around the world. Susan creates designs that blur the lines between jewellery, fashion and art, to create contemporary wearables that stretch the boundaries of traditional leatherwork, with the the woman who desires opulence and individuality in mind.
In her current work for Susan Y. Designs, Susan has returned to her creative roots, developing an original method for incorporating luxurious leathers in jewellery and handbag design. Each piece is a synthesis of suede, snakeskin and other exotic leathers from Italy, Dubai and Australia with intricate hand beading using Swarovski crystals and fine Japanese Miyuki seed beads.
Applying specialized techniques by creating statement jewellery pieces and Bird of Paradise purses that are full of colour, dimensionality and texture. While these creations are dramatic in scale, they are extremely wearable as the leather components are lightweight and comfortable.
Each handbag and piece of jewellery is designed and then handcrafted, representing the essence of my creativity into a piece of art that may truly enhance the experience of the wearer.
The versatility of leather and the endless ways of working within this medium not limiting the imagination is the theme that runs through the last 40 years of my artistic practice. I am inspired by turning leather into beautiful embellished wearable art that lifts a woman to heights of elation. This inspiration gives me a great feeling of accomplishment and integrity and has brought me happiness and a sense of being. h the boundaries of traditional leather work, by combining traditional dressmaking and embroidery techniques with different leathers, beads, colours and textures. Each of my pieces compliments or contrasts opposites by showing the rough against smooth, the matte against shiny or the bright against dull. This unites the essence of the design together to make unexpected choices within each piece, creating unique functional decorative body adornments. I know a piece has turned out really well when it looks elegant and enhances a woman’s beauty, something she is proud to wear and makes her the centre of attention without distracting from her individuality.
